In this essay, I would like to analyze the play in terms of its literary and dramaturgical characteristics. Firstly, the overall style and type of the play will be analyzed. This will be followed by focusing on the use of language. The title of the play is a reference to the expressed attitude that the men in this play, George Henderson and Henry Peters, have towards the two women that appear: Mrs.Peters and Mrs. The play consists of only one act and thus unifies place, time and action. The scene is a kitchen in a farmhouse that is entered and exited by the characters. The time that this scene unfolds in is not specified but it is implied that the action is happening on the same day. The action that the characters take is performed only in said kitchen, except when it is indicated that the characters exit the scene. Any action that has taken or is taking place elsewhere is not depicted on stage, however.Another feature of the play that is notable at first sight is the abundant use of specific stage instructions. The kitchen is described in vivid detail - from unwashed pans to a dishtowel on the table.Aside from the detailed stage instructions, there are no other features that indicate or explain a context to the play. There is no prologue or epilogue, and no narration. The context and meaning of the action on stage unfolds through the stage directions and the dialogues. Foster Wright.
